Welcome to soaps and detergents. The links to either side of this window will allow you to navigate around this site.

A detergent is a chemical compound that cleans. By this definition soap cleans things, and so can be considered a detergent. However, chemists generally make a distinction between soaps and detergents, since soaps are salts of carboxylic acids, and detergents are sulphate or sulphonate salts.
We use the term detergent in place of synthetic detergent although 'detergent' is a word used to describe something that displays detergency, or cleaning power.
