Examples of compounds showing types of hybridisation

sp hybridization;BeCl2 This will show a linear shaped molecule as it will contain the one sp orbital that will be used in bonding the Be to the Cl atom.

BeCl2.gif

sp2 hybridization;BH3formed by the overlap of the (B)sp2 hybrids with the 1s orbital of the H. As each sp2 orbitals is located along a different axis and each is joined to the 1s orbital of the three H's a trigonal planar shape is formed.

sp3 hybridization;CH4 Methane will show a tetrahedral shape as the four sp3 will be involved in four bonds at an angular arrangement of that which will form the tetrahedral shape.
