Splitting In The d-Orbital

Examples

1. [Ti (OH2)6]3+ this gives out a red-purple colour.
This complex has a d1 configuration and plits as shown below

d1 Splitting

This has an absorption of Vmax = 20300 cm-1 this is the wave number of the light absorbed when this [Ti (OH2)]3+ complexes' e- jumps from the t2g to the Eg energy level.

2. [Cr (Cl-)6]4-, this is a green complex.
Cr Forms a d4 complex and it is high spin so it forms a ligand feild splitting diagram as shown below.

d4 High spin

When this gets excited 1 of the electrons on the t2g energy level jumps to the Eg energy level

3. [Cu (OH2)6]2+ this complex gives out a blue colour.
It has a d-orbital configuration of d9 and forms and octahedral complex, the splitting is shown below. It can only have one splitting pattern and that is high spin

d9
