I would first like to point out that Abiogenesis is not the same as Evolution. Abiogenesis is the name given to the development of life from non-living matter. Evolution is the theory that life adapts to its environment through natural selection. The Miller\Urey experiment was an experiment to see if the conditions for abiogenesis could be reproduced in the laboratory. Miller used gases in proportions believed to be present in early Earth's atmosphere, cheifly methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3), hydrogen (H2) and water (H2O). These gases were placed in a closed system. A continuous electric current was passed through the mixture to simulate lightning storms, believed to be common on early Earth. Chromotography was used to analyse the results. Miller observed that 10 - 15% of the carbon was now in the form of organic compounds. 2% of the carbon had formed some of the amino acids which are used to make proteins. Perhaps most importantly, Miller's experiment showed that organic compounds such as amino acids, which are essential to cellular life, could be made easily under the conditions that scientists believed to be present on the early Earth. |
