Phenols

Phenol

Phenols are compounds that have a hodroxyl group attached to an aromatic ring. A mixture of water and phenol is known as 'carbolic acid' and is a very strong antiseptic.

Bromine Water

Add bromine water to an aqueous soltion of the phenol, and shake test tube. The bromine is decolourised and a white precipitate is formed

Liebermann's Nitroso Reaction

Add a crystal of sodium nitrite to 2ml of concentrated sulphuric acid, and shake until dissolved. Add 0.1g of the phenol. A blue colour indicates the presence of a phenol. If it is then poured into about 20ml of ice cold water, it goes red, and then upon addition of 10% sodium hydroxide solution, it goes back to the blue colour
