This website contains information about amides. The links will go into more detail about the structure of amides, the reactions and the uses of amide chemicals.
Amides are found in all living organisms as it is different types of amides that make up DNA, forming alpha helixes and beta pleated sheets.
Amides have the ability to bond very strongly to itself, at other amide sites down the chain, or different chains with amides in. This is due to the potential hydrogen bonding between the oxygen and the hydrogen from the NH group elsewhere. These are very strong intermolecular bonds, which allow the structures explained on the structure page.
