Neptunium was discovered in 1940 by E.M. McMillan and P. Abelson in Berkley, California. The element gets its name from the name of the planet neptune which is in turn from the name of the greek god of the sea. This radioactive element is made in kilogram quantities from spent uranium rods from nuclear reactors.
